Jakarta (WNAM MONITORING: Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto suggested developing an integrated clean energy system, transitioning to a clean energy-powered transportation sector, and pursuing energy efficiency to achieve the target of net-zero emissions.
Speaking at the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) 2nd Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta on Wednesday, the minister noted that an integrated clean energy system is viable through strengthening regional electricity connectivity.
Hartarto expressed belief that solid power connectivity would lead to a more resilient and flexible clean energy system.
“At the same time, Indonesia will tap into its abundant renewable sources to produce renewable energy types, such as hydrogen and ammonia,” he stated.
Drawing attention to the second initiative, the minister highlighted the importance of promoting the use of eco-friendly fuels in the transportation sector.
In this regard, he underlined the need for governments to be committed to supporting such a transformation by developing requisite infrastructures, both in rural and urban areas.
“Third, we propose promoting energy efficiency in various sectors,” he stated while paying special attention to industrial activities.
According to the minister, the third initiative entails the designation of an emission standard, provision of incentives, and development of technology instrumental for energy efficiency.
“This initiative is the approach we apply to carry out decarbonization, harmonize climate goals and economic growth, and pursue energy resilience,” he explained.
Hartarto underscored that the three initiatives present a room for AZEC countries to collaborate and exchange innovations to jointly achieve decarbonization targets.
AZEC, a decarbonization initiative launched by Indonesian President Joko Widodo and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida at the G20 Summit in Bali in November 2022, consists of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei Darussalam, and Australia.
