There is an old saying that judges should speak only through their written judgements and avoid verbal duels and wranglings with the defence counsels inside the court rooms during the course of proceedings of under trial cases.
This golden principle unfortunately is being more honoured in the breach than observance in many courts. The old jurists say that if the judges enter into verbal duels with the lawyers the danger is that some words may come out of their mouths inadvertently revealing what was at the back of their mind about the subjudice cases, thus making it easy for the listeners to guess whose side they were on well before the announcement of the verdict. There is certainly a point there in this saying of the old jurists.
