WNAM MONITORING: Global leaders have united for glacier preservation at the Dushanbe Conference, emphasizing the importance of protecting these natural wonders. The International High-Level Conference on Glacier Preservation concluded in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, with a call to action for global cooperation on glacier conservation. The conference adopted the Dushanbe Declaration and the Dushanbe Appeal: Call for Action, urging UN Member States and stakeholders to strengthen international cooperation to advance the global agenda for cryosphere and glacier conservation.
The conference provided a platform for constructive dialogue and exchange of best practices and scientific knowledge aimed at resolving one of the most pressing environmental problems of our time – the rapid melting of glaciers. Tajikistan’s Prime Minister, Kohir Rasulzoda, emphasized that glaciers play a key role in maintaining global ecological balance, socio-economic growth, and addressing water resource issues.
The event included two plenary sessions, 12 thematic sessions, 2 high-level round tables, and pre-conference events, including 8 high-level forums and 17 parallel events. The Government of Tajikistan also organized the Glacier Festival to raise awareness of the importance of glacier melting and the value of water resources.
With over 2,600 participants from 90 countries, the conference demonstrated the importance of the Dushanbe Platform for discussing issues related to glacier melting and their impact on water resources. The Dushanbe Declaration and the Dushanbe Appeal: Call for Action call on UN Member States and stakeholders to take necessary measures to strengthen international cooperation to advance and align the global agenda for cryosphere and glacier conservation.
