Jakarta ( WNAM MONITORING): The Indonesian government has lifted quota restrictions on live cattle imports to ensure the availability of meat and milk supplies and to strengthen national food security.
Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, announced the policy during the commemoration of Nusantara Milk Day 2025 in Jakarta on Sunday.
He said that importers are now permitted to bring in live cattle without quota limits for various purposes, including supporting the livestock industry and meeting public consumption needs.
By removing the restrictions, Hasan added, the government aims to give the national dairy processing industry an opportunity to increase production volumes, improve product quality, and enhance supply chain resilience.
However, he did not provide technical details about the new policy.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono previously stated that Indonesia plans to import 2 million live cattle over the next five years, including 1.2 million dairy cows. This year alone, the country is targeting 250,000 head.
He emphasized that the imports would be treated as investments and would not use funds from the State Budget.
The government is encouraging domestic entrepreneurs, cooperatives, individuals, and foreign companies to invest in cattle breeding in Indonesia, he added.
In March, 1,250 dairy cows imported from Australia arrived in Banyuwangi, East Java, as part of efforts to bolster the national dairy industry through investment.
