Massive afforestation vital to counter environmental crisis

Islamabad ( WNAM REPORT ): Environmental experts, scientists, educationists and social leaders stressed the urgent need for a nationwide tree plantation campaign to address the growing threats of climate change, environmental degradation and food insecurity. They expressed these views during a tree plantation drive organized by the Rising Pakistan Forum in collaboration with the Women Welfare and Development Centre.
The event brought together renowned geologist and scientist Dr. Adeel Nazir, meteorological expert Dr. Abeer from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, former Chairman of the Pakistan Agricultural Council Dr. Ghulam Ali, Chairman of Mukammal Pakistan Party Mateen Hashmi, President of the Rising Pakistan Forum Rakhshanda Tasneem, and Principal of the Women Welfare and Development Centre Ms. Ismat Afridi. The speakers highlighted the devastating impact of deforestation on the environment and emphasized that collective efforts are essential to restore ecological balance.
Addressing the participants, Dr. Adeel Nazir said that Pakistan is witnessing alarming changes in its geographical and climatic patterns, adding that the monsoon system has undergone dangerous transformations due to climate change. He urged the government and citizens to launch emergency tree plantation initiatives, stating that expanding forest cover remains one of the most effective ways to combat environmental challenges. He also educated students about the causes of pollution and practical measures to reduce its impact.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Abeer emphasized that rapid deforestation has intensified climate-related risks and called for immediate practical measures to mitigate their effects. She noted that the country’s youth can play a vital role in environmental conservation by actively participating in plantation campaigns and adopting eco-friendly practices.
Former Chairman of the Pakistan Agricultural Council Dr. Ghulam Ali highlighted the importance of planting fruit-bearing and food-producing trees under the Green and Clean Pakistan initiative. He said that increasing such plantations would not only improve the environment but also strengthen Pakistan’s food security in the face of climate change.
Chairman of Mukammal Pakistan Party Mateen Hashmi said that protecting the environment requires both large-scale afforestation and the promotion of environmentally friendly industries capable of reducing harmful emissions and industrial pollution.
President of the Rising Pakistan Forum Rakhshanda Tasneem encouraged students to become ambassadors of environmental protection, saying that today’s youth are the architects of tomorrow’s Pakistan. She urged them to keep their homes and surroundings clean and to not only plant trees but also ensure their proper care and maintenance.
Principal Ms. Ismat Afridi welcomed the distinguished guests, thanked them for their participation, and briefed the audience about the mission, objectives and achievements of the Women Welfare and Development Centre.
At the conclusion of the event, the Rising Pakistan Forum distributed saplings among students to encourage environmental stewardship. The guests also participated in the plantation drive by planting trees on the institution’s premises.
