WNAM REPORT: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has announced the promotion of Chief of the General Staff (CGS) of Pakistan Army, Lieutenant General Aamer Raza, to the rank of “Four-Star General” and his appointment as “Commander National Strategic Command”.
The Prime Minister congratulated General Aamer Raza on his promotion and appointment. He also wished him the best for undertaking this important responsibility.
The new title was established after the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025, were passed. Field Marshal Asim Munir was also made the Chief of Defence Forces under the same legislation.
The Commander of the National Strategic Command post was created after the abolishment of the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) — General Shamshad Mirza was the last to hold the position.
The law states that the prime minister may appoint the commander from among serving Pakistan Army generals for a three-year term, based on the recommendation of the Chief of the Army Staff-Chief of Defence Forces.
The Gen Offr Maj Gen Syed Aamer Raza, HI (M) was commissioned in 6 Lancers in 1988. He is a graduate of C&SC Qta and National Defence University Isb. The Gen offr holds a master degree in Intl Relations from University of Nottingham UK, MSc in Arts and Science of Warfare and MSc in Def & Strat Studies, both from National Def University Isb.
He has varied experience of Command, Staff and Instructional assignments. Commanded 6 Lancers from Nov 2007 to Sep 2009, an Armd Bde, an Inf Bde at South Waziristan and an Infantry Division. He has served as Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade, GSO-2 to Chief of Gen Staff, Chief of Staff of a Strike Corps and DG Weapons & Equipment Directorate.
On Instructional side he has been instructor at SA&MW, Dir FORADS and Chief Instr at C&SC Qta. The General officer took over the command of HIT on 28th April in the year 2020. On 11th Oct 2022, he was promoted to the coveted rank of Lt Gen.
