CDA to Introduce Micro-Planning for Better Waste Management: Director Sanitation

WNAM REPORT: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to introduce a comprehensive micro-planning and field-monitoring system for waste management and sanitation services in Islamabad, under which the deployment, contact details, assigned areas and responsibilities of sanitation workers will be clearly documented to improve efficiency, accountability and service delivery.
The initiative was discussed during an interactive session held at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) during a visit by CDA Director Sanitation Malik Atta and Deputy Director Sanitation Atta Bari Arshad. ICCI President Sardar Tahir Mehmood, Senior Vice President Tahir Ayub, Vice President Irfan Chaudhry , representatives of various trade associations, Executive Members and ICCI members participated in the discussion and highlighted sanitation and civic issues affecting businesses and citizens.
Speaking at the session, CDA Director Sanitation Malik Atta said that sustainable improvement in Islamabad’s sanitation system required collective efforts and close coordination among the CDA, ICCI, trade associations and other stakeholders. He said every stakeholder had a role to play and that civic issues could not be resolved effectively unless all concerned institutions worked together.
He said the CDA was focusing on developing a proper micro-planning mechanism under which every street, market and area would have a clearly identifiable sanitation worker and supervisor responsible for maintaining cleanliness. The system, he added, would enable the CDA to know exactly who was responsible for a particular area and would make field operations more efficient and accountable.
He further said that management of waste trolleys and collection points would also be improved, with greater focus on their proper placement, maintenance, monitoring and certification. The CDA was also coordinating with the Rawalpindi administration and other relevant officials to strengthen the waste-disposal chain.
Speaking on the occasion, ICCI President Sardar Tahir Mehmood said the business community wanted to work with the CDA to develop practical and sustainable solutions to sanitation, waste management and other civic problems. He said the purpose of bringing CDA officials, ICCI and representatives of different trade associations together was to establish direct communication so that grassroots-level issues could reach the concerned authorities without delay.
He assured that ICCI would continue to facilitate interaction between the business community and government institutions and would fully support initiatives aimed at improving sanitation, waste management and municipal services in Islamabad. He stressed that the business community wanted to be a partner in finding solutions rather than merely raising complaints.
Senior Vice President ICCI Tahir Ayub particularly highlighted the sanitation situation at the Fruit and Vegetable Market, I-11/3, and drew attention to the garbage dumping point there, which he said was causing serious nuisance and creating problems for traders, visitors and surrounding areas.
Vice President ICCI Irfan Chaudhry highlighted sanitation and civic problems faced by the Steel Market, I-10, and called for improved waste collection, regular monitoring and better coordination between CDA field staff and representatives of the market.
Executive Members Waseem Chaudhry, Zulqurnain Abbasi and Imran Minhas, along with ICCI members Akhtar Abbasi, Ismail Khan, Ajab Gul, Syed Nadeem Mansur and representatives of various trade associations also participated in the interactive session and shared their observations and proposals regarding sanitation, waste management and other civic issues. Former Senior Vice President Khalid Chaudhry moderated the session impressively.
