WNAM REPORT: Tetra Pak Pakistan and WWF-Pakistan today recognised Crescent Model Girls High School, Lahore, for collecting 173 kg of used beverage cartons under their joint Recycling Awareness Project. As the Central Region winner, the school received furniture made from recycled Tetra Pak cartons, showing students how used packaging can be turned into useful products.
The school’s collection of approximately 12,110 used beverage cartons was recognised at a ceremony on Thursday, 29 October 2026, where furniture awarded for its recycling efforts was inaugurated with a ribbon-cutting. The ceremony featured a recap of the school’s carton collection efforts, a short quiz with Tetra Pak’s mascot, Captain Dubloo, and an educational mime performance on water conservation by senior school students.
Speaking on the initiative, Muhammad Bin Shahzad, Sustainability Manager at Tetra Pak Pakistan, said, “Today’s students are not just the leaders of tomorrow, they are also the change makers of today. Every responsible choice they make can create a positive impact beyond the classroom. Our partnership with WWF-Pakistan reflects Tetra Pak’s commitment to strengthening collection and recycling efforts while empowering the next generation to make informed, responsible decisions and contribute to a more sustainable future for their communities.”
Hammad Naqi Khan, Director General, WWF-Pakistan, said, “When young people are given the opportunity to act, they turn awareness into responsibility. The students of Crescent Model Girls High School have shown that meaningful environmental action can begin in the classroom.”
Mian Altaf Saleem, Managing Trustee, Crescent Education Trust, thanked WWF-Pakistan and Tetra Pak Pakistan for their support and appreciated the students and teachers for their commitment to the initiative.
Running since 2017 with support from Tetra Pak Pakistan, the project included 79 awareness sessions held in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Wah Cantt and Khanpur (Rahim Yar Khan). Alongside these sessions, schools participated in a UBC collection competition, encouraging students to put their learning into practice by collecting and recycling used cartons. A total of 47 schools contributed to the collection.
Crescent Model Girls High School, Lahore, emerged as the winner of the Central Region, collecting 173 kg of used beverage cartons, equivalent to approximately 12,110 cartons. In recognition of the school’s efforts, it was presented with a set of furniture made from recycled cartons collected through the initiative.
Implemented by WWF-Pakistan’s Environmental Education Department, the Recycling Awareness Project forms part of the organisation’s broader efforts to integrate environmental awareness and sustainable waste management practices into Pakistan’s education system. By combining awareness sessions with practical activities, the project encourages students to take an active role in reducing waste and promoting recycling within their schools and communities.
Human consumption of materials is escalating at an unsustainable rate, with the World Bank estimating that annual global waste is set to grow by 73% by 2050. The world urgently needs to move to new models and move towards a circular economy where materials are not wasted and nature is regenerated.
