WNAM MONITORING: Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Tuesday pledged that Kuala Lumpur would crack down on any shipment via Malaysia that aids Israel’s military capabilities.
“Malaysia’s position is clear and unequivocal,” Anwar said on the US social media company X.
He said that Malaysia would not allow itself to “be used as a conduit for any shipment that supports or contributes to Israel’s military capabilities and its atrocities against Palestinians and other innocent lives.”
Earlier in the day, Bloomberg reported that Malaysian authorities seized three containers bound for Israel at the country’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas on Aug.19 and have not released them as authorities investigate their contents, citing people familiar with the matter.
The containers, which reportedly carried electric bike parts from a Chinese manufacturer, were bound for Ashdod Port south of Tel Aviv.
Another container from the Philippines was detained on Aug. 7 after Malaysian authorities suspected it contained weapons because it was bound for Israeli defense firm Elbit Systems Ltd.
“Any suspicious shipment will be subject to inspection and investigation in accordance with Malaysian law. Where a violation is established, decisive action will be taken,” Anwar said on Tuesday.
