BAKU ( WNAM MONITORING): Azerbaijan’s Permanent Mission in Geneva organized a special event titled “Beyond Survival – Restoring Dignity and Reclaiming Rights” during the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council, focusing on the protection of the rights of people affected by landmines. The discussion was organized jointly with Universal Rights Group and the Mission of Algeria.
Elshad Isgandarov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, noted that Baku had launched a special initiative in 2024 aimed at restoring the fundamental rights of mine victims. He said that, as a result, the Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in 2025 titled “Impact of Anti-Personnel Mines on the Full Realization of All Human Rights.”
The diplomat stressed the need for a new resolution aimed at moving from recognition of the rights of mine victims to their practical realization. Drawing attention to the scale of the landmine problem faced by Azerbaijan, he stressed the importance of strengthening international cooperation in this area and increasing support for mine victims.
The event was addressed by the permanent representatives of Algeria, Mozambique and Uganda to the UN Office in Geneva, as well as representatives of the UN Mine Action Service (UNMAS), the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and other international organizations.
The discussion focused on the medical and psychological rehabilitation of mine victims, their social and economic reintegration, as well as the links between mine contamination, climate change and human rights.
