NEW DELHI ( WNAM MONITORING): Hundreds of investigators were detained in India’s capital New Delhi as the newly founded Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) launched a protest demanding the resignation of chief commissioner election over deletion of voters from electoral rolls.

India has witnessed protests launched by opposition parties after The Indian Express reported last month that two election commissioners had raised concerns with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar about decisions related to the revision of the voter list, an exercise that began last year.

The revision exercise of the voter list began last year and has been rolled out in multiple states. The opposition alleges that the exercise removed a large number of voters.

On Friday, the leaders of CJP held protests in Delhi and the financial capital Mumbai. Several groups and political parties supported the protest call.

In Delhi, authorities imposed prohibitory orders, deployed additional security personnel, and prevented people from gathering at the Jantar Mantar protest site. The group previously held a massive protest at the same site earlier this year because of exam paper leaks that led to the resignation of the education minister.

Police detained more than 700 people, including leaders from the opposition Aam Aadmi Party, and members of various student organizations, the Press Trust of India reported. The entry and exit at 11 metro stations were closed since morning.

Last week, the Election Commission said all its actions “have been in accordance with laws and instructions of the Commission.”
