Jakarta(WNAM Monitoring): President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted the importance of the teachers’ roles in realizing the Golden Indonesia vision by 2045 on the country’s centenary.
While opening the 23rd Indonesian Teachers Association (PGRI) Congress, the president noted that Indonesia will undergo at least three leadership terms before reaching 2045.
“Respectable teachers, I never get tired of reminding you all that Indonesia has a golden opportunity to leap forward and become an advanced country within the next three leadership terms,” the president stated, as observed by online means on Saturday.
He said that Indonesia’s future as an advanced country is not merely empty assumptions as international organizations, such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank, have projected Indonesia to become an advanced country in future.
With such a great opportunity, Jokowi said that Indonesia should escape the middle-income trap.
Indonesia should not have the same fate as certain Latin American countries whose status has not advanced beyond developing countries since the 1970s or even declining to be poor countries, he stated.
“We should ensure it will not happen in Indonesia. We should optimize the opportunity to leap forward to become an advanced country when we obtain the so-called demographic dividend,” the president remarked.
To ensure a successful leap to become an advanced country, Indonesia should nurture its demographic dividend to ensure a quality and productive younger generation, he emphasized.
