(WNAM Monitoring): A Kazakh delegation led by Majilis Speaker Yerlan Koshanov arrived in Geneva to take part in the regular 148th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, Kazinform News Agency cites the Majilis press service.
He expressed condolences to the people of Russia over the terror act at the Crocus City Hall near Moscow.
He stressed the General Debate’s overall theme Parliamentary diplomacy: Building bridges for peace and understanding is gaining ground now. The Speaker said Kazakhstan contributes to sustainable development and fostering peace. First of all, thanks to large-scale political reforms of the Head of State the country created all conditions for building a democratic and just Kazakhstan. The parliament also takes an active part in developing them. He added Kazakhstan’s initiatives to ban nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and regular congresses of the leaders of world and traditional religions are of global value.
Yerlan Koshanov emphasized the importance of the participation of parliaments in promoting UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and told those present about the initiative to open the UN Center for SDGs for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty.
He noted recently the Kazakh Parliament voted to deploy peacekeepers to participate in UN missions, including in the Golan Heights. It is the country’s first independent mission under the UN. It is a great contribution of Kazakhstan to global security and stability.
The Majilis Speaker also touched upon food security issues citing the work of the Islamic Organization for Food Security as an instance. He also briefed on the efficient use of water resources and reminded that Presidents of Kazakhstan and France announced that a One Water Summit would be held in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly’s high-level session and Kazakhstan’s plans to hold a Regional Climate Summit in Kazakhstan in 2026 under the auspices of the United Nations.
