Jakarta: President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo announced plans to begin working from Indonesia’s future capital, Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan, starting in July 2024 as scheduled. He confirmed this after inspecting the Nusantara State Palace on Wednesday.
At present, Jokowi is awaiting confirmation regarding the water supply in the Nusantara area from the Sepaku Semoi Dam.
“I am very optimistic about the office. We’re just waiting for one thing, water in July,” Jokowi said.
“We have already inaugurated the Sepaku Dam. Now we are waiting for the pumps to raise the water and then distribute it to the buildings and the houses in Nusantara,” he added.
On Tuesday, Jokowi officially inaugurated the dam. With a capacity of 16 million cubic meters, it is expected to provide potable water to Nusantara and neighboring Balikpapan at a rate of up to 500 liters per second.
Jokowi also explained that various facilities are currently being constructed in Nusantara, including government buildings, financial institutions, sports facilities, and educational institutions.
“These are the stages: first, government buildings, then financial institutions, followed by sports facilities, and what we have been focusing on these past two days is education, including elementary, junior high, high school, and university levels. I think everything is progressing well, and we hope everything will continue to progress,” Jokowi added.
The President plans to commemorate Indonesia’s Independence Day on August 17 in Nusantara. So far, the preparations are proceeding smoothly.
“The arrangements for Independence Day are almost complete; there are no issues. We thoroughly checked everything from the venue locations to the order of the ceremonies, and everything went smoothly. Therefore, by mid-July, the construction here will be ready, and we will start preparing for August 17,” Jokowi explained.
