Jakarta: Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi reminded the younger generation in Indonesia to learn and possess digital skills in order to be prepared towards the national development in the future.

He considered digital skills are necessary because the skill set has become more massive recently, as artificial intelligence (AI) has developed rapidly.

“Technology is not waiting for us to be ready, but it continues to move. There is no choice but we have to adapt, adopt, and continue to think creatively and critically,” he said in the ministry’s statement here on Sunday.

He conveyed this statement when he was delivering a scientific oration at the 10th Graduation of the Indonesian Nahdlatul Ulama University (UNUSIA) at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, East Jakarta, on Saturday (June 15).

Setiadi reminded that without careful preparation, by 2030, there will be 85 million jobs that require digital skills that cannot be filled due to the lack of competency.

Currently, the world needs 140 million capable digital workers, he stated, and by 2025, as many as 65 percent of jobs require workers to have skills in the field of AI.

He also said that there are at least three professions that will be increasingly needed in the next five years, namely AI and machine learning specialists, robotics engineering, and database architects.

Therefore, young Indonesians, who have learned basic digital skills, must continue to improve their skills in order to seize opportunities in the future to contribute to the national development, he said.

Setiadi pointed out that the young generation needs to learn three main skills in the digital field, which are digital strategy to respond to market trends, drive innovation through data, and the ability to initiate strategic collaboration.
