ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT): Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan, held a virtual meeting with the Swat Chamber of Commerce and Industries via Zoom, where he acknowledged the significant potential of Swat in the export of gems, jewelry, minerals, and fruits.
The meeting was aimed at addressing the challenges faced by the local business community and exploring ways to enhance the region’s economic prospects.
During the meeting, the President of the Swat Chamber of Commerce highlighted the pressing issues affecting the local industries, particularly the need for the timely renewal of the chamber’s license.
The President urged the minister for an expedited renewal process, to which Minister Kamal assured that the license would be renewed within a few days.
The chamber representatives also made a request for the allocation of special land for the chamber and the establishment of an industrial zone in Swat.
Minister Kamal responded positively, asking them to submit formal proposals for further deliberation on these matters. “We are open to considering your proposals for an industrial zone. Once submitted, we will engage in further discussions to ensure that your needs are met,” he said.
The Swat Chamber’s President also highlighted the region’s challenges, emphasizing that Swat remains a relatively underdeveloped area that requires government support to unlock its full economic potential.
He pointed out that the road infrastructure in Swat was in poor condition and that reopening the local airport was crucial for improving accessibility and supporting business growth.
Additionally, the chamber members extended an invitation to Minister Kamal to visit Swat, which the minister accepted with thanks.
He acknowledged the need for on-ground assessment to better understand the local challenges and opportunities.
Minister Kamal urged the chamber to submit proposals for attractive projects to the Export Development Fund (EDF), which could help in revitalizing the local economy. “Submitting compelling projects to the EDF can open up new avenues for development and exports from Swat,” he suggested.
Furthermore, Minister Kamal emphasized the importance of having commerce officers available at the district level to help develop the domestic commerce capacities and assist in developing the export-oriented local economies.
He advocated for the establishment of trade promotion officers based on both area and product specialization, which would help in expanding small businesses and SMEs at the grassroots level.
“To truly support small businesses and SMEs, we need a more localized approach with commerce officers who understand the specific needs of each area and industry especially from the export lease of economic development,” he stated.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to work towards the economic development of Swat, with the federal government promising to extend its support in addressing the challenges faced by the region’s business community.
