WNAM REPORT: Indonesia voiced its rejection of the use of nuclear weapons at the High-Level Meeting of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Thursday.
The meeting was held to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons.
Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi, at the meeting, highlighted that the future currently being pursued is still under the shadow of destruction by nuclear weapons, which will be exacerbated by the emergence of the latest advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI).
“Against these grim developments, we should ask ourselves: Should fear of nuclear weapons be our guarantee for peace? Indonesia’s answer will forever be no,” she asserted.
Indonesia has reaffirmed its commitment to a nuclear-weapon-free world as Marsudi on Tuesday (September 24) handed over the instrument for the ratification of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons to the UN Secretariat.
“Indonesia refuses to stand aside while the threat of nuclear war today is higher than at any point during the Cold War,” she stressed.
The minister underscored the need to focus on three aspects, with the first being countries in the world should start disarmament negotiations earnestly.
Second, she emphasized the need for countries to confront the risks of emerging technologies. Thus, the world should create regulations and control to prevent the threat of nuclear conflicts.
Third, Marsudi stated that the world must ensure the legacy of peace by burying divisions, mistrust, and outdated paradigms and choosing unity, cooperation, and commitment to peace.
“Fear should not dictate our future. Indonesia remains resolute in our goal for total elimination of nuclear weapons,” she remarked.
