Fortunate are the nations that are blessed with rulers who are down to earth, impeccably honest believing in merit and merit alone and who are poor friendly and power doesn’t corrupt them. Angela Markel had been one of them who remained chancellor of Germany for good 16 years.
After retirement she has been living in a modest apartment. When she was in power she never appointed any person from her next of kin to any lucrative official job.
During her stint as Chancellor of Germany she neither bought any costly new car or jet for her official use. After leaving office during the course of one of her press conferences when a newsman asked her that she was wearing the same suit which she wore when she was Chancellor Does it mean that she doesn’t have another suit she said I was not a model, I was head of a country.
If we place even a cursory glance over the last century or so on the political scene of the world we find many leaders like Mao TSE Tung, Hoh Chin Minh, Nelson Mandela, Julias Niarare, Fidel Castro, Soekarno and Imam Khomeni to mention a few who lived in the hearts of not only their own countrymen but of all the downtrodden people of the world who don’t know where their next meal would come from because there wasn’t any contradiction in their words and deeds.
Alas on this score there is a lot to be desired in those who move in the corridors of power in this country.
