Solo (WNAM MONITORING):  President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has pledged to continue supporting the development of disabled athletes even after his presidency ends, according to the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) of Indonesia.

“I asked President Jokowi who would monitor the NPC after his retirement, and he said, ‘I will always oversee you,'” NPC chairperson Senny Marbun said in Solo, Central Java, on Tuesday.

Marbun emphasized that Jokowi has laid a strong foundation to promote equality among all Indonesian athletes and improve their living standards.

He also highlighted the ongoing 17th National Paralympic Week (Peparnas), stating that the event, which President Jokowi opened on October 6, aims to identify promising athletes who can be trained to compete internationally.

“My goal here is to scout new talent. Mr. Jokowi has helped by establishing a 10-hectare training center in Karanganyar. This facility will be used to develop new athletes who will succeed their seniors. We will train them there,” Marbun explained.

He expressed satisfaction with the performance of the para-athletes competing for medals at the 2024 Peparnas, noting their determination and physical strength.

“I have high expectations for the athletes here and hope to discover new talent at Peparnas,” he added.

Marbun also stressed the importance of regional governments providing full support to disabled sports talent.

“Initially, 21 provinces stated they were not ready to send their athletes to Peparnas due to financial difficulties. We encouraged them to participate because this event is dedicated to disabled athletes,” he said.

He urged against viewing people with disabilities as marginalized individuals.

“Do not hide them; they need mentorship,” Marbun pointed out.
