WNAM REPORT: The second meeting of the Working group on the development of a set of measures to protect the historic and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan under UNESCO protection took place under the chairmanship of Kazakh Culture and Information Ministry Aida Balayeva on November 30 in Astana, News Agency reports.

As part of the meeting, plans of three working subgroups, with each focusing on specific aspects of protection and promotion of the cultural heritage of Kazakhstan, were revealed.

The first working subgroup, working on intangible cultural heritage, aims at increasing the expertise of personnel of museums, reserves, libraries and so on, as well as implementing interdisciplinary educational program at universities.

In addition, the work is ongoing to add Kazakh traditional games classes to the Physical culture general education program.

The subgroup is also to conduct extensive research (ICH inventory, documenting the techniques for making and decorating Kazakh yurts, endangered carpet-weaving).

Working directly with Kazakhstan’s objects that are under UNESCO protection, the second working group focuses on management, safety and infrastructure issues.

Besides, serial transnational nominations “Silk Roads. Fergana-Syrdarya Corridor”, “Silk Roads: Volga-Caspian Corridor” are in the spotlight of the subgroup’s experts.

Set to work on protection and promotion of documentary heritage of Kazakhstan under the UNESCO Memory of the World program, the third subgroup is to focus on preparations for the nomination of manuscripts of Abai (Book of Words) and Mashkhur Zhusup Kopeev for inscription on the UNESCO Memory of the World register.

The manuscripts of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and the documents of the anti-nuclear movement Nevada-Semipalatinsk were successfully inscribed on the Memory of the World International Register in 2003 and 2005, respectively.

During the meeting, it was also noted that the establishment of a State register of written heritage of Kazakhstan is under consideration.
