WNAM REPORT: Pakistan Navy is preparing to assume command of Combined Task Force 151 (CTF-151) from Turkish Navy on January 22, 2025, in a formal ceremony to be held in Bahrain.
CTF-151 is one of five task forces operating under the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF), a coalition established in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions. The primary mission of CTF-151 is to combat piracy in its designated areas of operation, ensuring the safety and security of international maritime routes.
In addition to counter-piracy operations, CTF-151 plays a critical role in addressing other maritime challenges, including human trafficking, unregulated and illegal fishing, and organized maritime crimes. Established in January 2009, this multinational task force relies on member states to provide naval vessels and resources to fulfill its mission.
CTF-151 has been instrumental in significantly reducing incidents of piracy, particularly in high-risk areas like the Gulf of Aden. In 2010 alone, pirates targeted 45 ships in the region. However, with the deployment of CTF-151 and its collaborative efforts, piracy incidents have witnessed a sharp decline, ensuring safer seas for global trade and transit.
Pakistan Navy’s leadership of CTF-151 reflects its commitment to global maritime security and its capacity to manage complex naval operations. By contributing to the task force, Pakistan reinforces its dedication to maintaining open and secure maritime trade routes, which are vital for international commerce.
