WNAM REPORT: The Indonesian government reiterated its commitment to fully support the ASEAN Community Vision 2045 during the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat) in Langkawi, Malaysia, on Sunday.

The vision, which will be ratified under Malaysia’s chairmanship this year, was highlighted in a statement from Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“This vision is important to realize ASEAN as a strong, dynamic, and resilient region in the next 20 years,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono stated in the statement.

He noted that the vision aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s Asta Cita (eight missions), emphasizing inclusive and sustainable development, as well as providing tangible benefits to the community.

Sugiono remarked that ASEAN’s institutional capacity and resources must be strengthened to support the vision’s achievement while highlighting the global conditions in which challenges are increasingly interconnected.

For that reason, he said, ASEAN must focus on encouraging comprehensive cooperation to address these challenges.

“Solving these challenges in isolation is no longer possible,” Sugiono added.

He stated that ASEAN must also maintain its unity and play a proactive role in ensuring regional stability and prosperity amidst increasing competition between major powers.

Sugiono expressed support for strengthening ASEAN mechanisms and institutions, including the ASEAN Regional Forum, East Asia Forum, and the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation (AIPR).

Respect for regional principles and norms, including the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, is also important for maintaining regional stability.

Sugiono further emphasized that ASEAN must intensify its efforts to help Myanmar resolve its crisis. He expressed full support for the special envoy of the ASEAN chair in carrying out the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

Regarding recent global developments, Indonesia welcomed the Gaza ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian resistance group Hamas and Israel, he remarked.

Sugiono called for the immediate and comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire agreement to prevent more casualties and to push for peace in Palestine.

He emphasized that lasting peace in Palestine can only be achieved if Israel ends its illegal occupation, allowing the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

“We must continue to call for the resumption of the peace process towards a two-state solution based on agreed international parameters,” he stated.
