WNAM REPORT: Public servants in the Japanese city of Ginan have won $67,000 in compensation after being forced to arrive at work five minutes early.
The conflict began in February 2021, when former city mayor Hideo Kojima ordered all city hall employees to report to work by 8:25 a.m. instead of the required 8:30 a.m., without providing any justification for the change.
The employees expressed dissatisfaction with the new rule and demanded that the extra time be counted as overtime. In December 2023, they filed a formal complaint with the Fair Trading Commission, demanding that they be compensated for the overtime hours for a period of three years.
In November 2024, the commission ruled in favor of the state employees, ordering the city to pay compensation in the amount of $67,000.
