WNAM MONITORING: President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed on the progress of tasks in the energy sector and the implementation of new projects.

Numerous projects are implemented annually to meet the population’s growing energy demands. As a result of these efforts, electricity production has increased by 30 percent over the past five years, reaching 81.5 billion kilowatt-hours.

According to projections, electricity consumption in Uzbekistan will reach 121 billion kilowatt-hours by 2035. In response, comprehensive measures are already being taken to develop all areas of the energy sector. By 2030, the share of green energy in total electricity generation is planned to reach 54 percent.

The most promising areas for development are hydropower and nuclear energy.

In particular, between 2025 and 2026, the construction of 2,983 micro-hydroelectric power plants with a total capacity of 167 megawatts is planned. These facilities will generate 500 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually and save 151 million cubic meters of natural gas. During construction, 1,200 people will be employed, and 520 permanent jobs will be created upon commissioning.

The Minister of Energy presented information on the projects planned for the current year. In 2024, 1,185 micro-hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 65 megawatts are planned, the majority of which will be implemented by private entrepreneurs.

There are also plans to utilize nuclear energy as a country’s key base source. Work is underway on a project to construct a low-capacity atomic power plant. All phases – from design to commissioning – will be conducted under the strict supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in accordance with global best practices and safety standards.

The head of the Uzatom Agency reported on the agreements reached, the status of negotiations, and the progress of the project implementation.

Instructions were given to ensure the timely commissioning of facilities and the reliable supply of additional energy to the population and various sectors of the economy.
