WNAM REPORT: On May 19, Turkey celebrates Ataturk Memorial Day and Youth and Sports Day. This public holiday is dedicated to a significant date in the country’s history, Anadolu Ajansi reports.
On May 19, 1919, the founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, arrived in the city of Samsun, where he addressed the youth with a call to mobilize to fight against foreign invaders who had occupied part of the country. This historic address became the starting point of the national liberation war, as a result of which the Turkish Republic was established.
Subsequently, this day was officially declared Youth Day, emphasizing the special role of the young generation in the formation of an independent Turkish state.
To mark the 106th anniversary of this event, celebrations and ceremonies are being held throughout Turkey and at the country’s diplomatic missions abroad.
