WNAM REPORT: Indonesia held a groundbreaking ceremony on June 29 for its integrated electric vehicle (EV) battery ecosystem in Karawang, West Java province.
The project is a joint operation between Indonesia’s state-owned miner PT Aneka Tambang (Antam), the state-owned investment holding company PT, and Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) in collaboration with Chinese firm Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygend Company (CBL).
The project, part of Indonesia’s national strategic projects, carries an investment value of 5.9 billion USD and spans 3,023 hectares. It is projected to absorb 8,000 direct workers.
It is designed to be environmentally friendly, utilising multiple energy sources including a 2×150 MW steam power plant, an 80 MW gas power plant, a 30 MW waste heat plant, and 172 MWp of solar power, including 24 MWp solar power at the Karawang factory.
In his remarks, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto stressed the importance of developing new energy industries as a strategic step towards achieving national energy independence and resilience. He noted that solar power will be a key pathway, with batteries playing a central role.
He expressed confidence that with its abundant natural resources and strategic international partnerships, Indonesia could achieve energy self-sufficiency within five to seven years.
