WNAM MONITORING: Institute of Seismology and Atmospheric Physics at the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan hosted a scientific and practical conference focused on reducing seismic risks in vulnerable regions of the country. The key topic of the event was the discussion of a draft law on seismic safety, according to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper published on Monday.
The strategy aims to further enhance the effectiveness of fundamental research on seismic hazard assessment in Turkmenistan.
The new law will define the legal, organizational, economic and social framework for ensuring seismic safety and will be aimed at preventing the negative impact of potential hazardous natural, geological and man-made processes on the lives and health of the Turkmen population and the surrounding environment.
Participants paid special attention to international projects. One successful example is the modernization of Ashgabat’s seismic monitoring system with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
According to the report, the proposed law will serve as a foundation for strengthening resilience to natural threats by providing a comprehensive legal and scientific framework for seismic safety in Turkmenistan.
