WNAM REPORT: The National Alms Agency (Baznas), along with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), is striving to strengthen Indonesia’s human resources in science and technology through the 2025 Research Scholarship.
Baznas Chairman Noor Achmad, in a press statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday, stated that alms (zakat) in Indonesia has great potential to support education and research.
“If there is substantial funding to finance major research, God willing, it will produce great scientists,” he said.
The 2025 Baznas Research Scholarship Program was launched at the Baznas Building, Jakarta, on August 19.
The Research Scholarship is part of Baznas’ Higher Education Scholarship program. The program is aimed at increasing literacy and innovation in Indonesia, assisting students and researchers in completing their research, and enhancing synergy and collaboration with policymakers.
Achmad stated that many students still need assistance with the Single Tuition Fee (UKT). However, out of hundreds of thousands of students, Baznas could only meet the needs of 36 thousand students.
Furthermore, Saidah Sakwan, Head of Distribution and Utilization Division at Baznas, stated that the 2025 Research Scholarship is aimed at strengthening the role of young researchers.
“Since 2019, the total number of Research Scholarship alumni has reached 1,104 people. We also provide this scholarship to the Zakat and Waqf Management Study Program (Mazawa) as a form of Baznas’ commitment to disciplines related to zakat,” she said.
In response, Laksana Tri Handoko, Head of BRIN, expressed his appreciation for Baznas’ efforts to support national research through the Baznas Research Scholarship Program. The program aligns with BRIN’s existing program.
“We greatly appreciate Baznas’s strong focus on research activities, especially for students. This aligns with BRIN’s existing degree-by-research program,” he said.
