As the Chairperson of the Diplomatic Affairs Committee at the Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders and Small Industries, I had the distinct honor of leading our first bilateral trade delegation from Pakistan to Barcelona, Spain. This historic visit marked a significant milestone in our efforts to deepen economic ties and open new avenues for collaboration between our two countries.

Our delegation was warmly welcomed by the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and its esteemed President, setting a positive tone for a series of productive meetings. We later visited the Pakistan Consulate and had the privilege of meeting with CG Murad Wazeer & senior officials to discuss avenues for mutual cooperation. This delegation was the first of its kind from Pakistan, symbolizing a new chapter in bilateral trade relations.

Spain and Pakistan share a trade relationship that, while currently modest, holds immense potential for growth. According to recent data, bilateral trade stands at approximately USD 500 million, with room to expand substantially through strategic partnerships, technology exchange, and sectoral diversification.

During our visit, we explored opportunities to enhance trade in sectors such as textiles, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and especially technology. Spain’s advancements in renewable energy, smart manufacturing, and digital infrastructure offer valuable lessons and collaboration potential for Pakistani industries eager to modernize and scale up.

Recognizing this, we are actively planning joint expos in both Pakistan and Spain to showcase products, technologies, and innovations that can serve as a catalyst for enhanced commercial exchange. These expos will provide platforms for small and medium enterprises from both countries to connect, collaborate, and build lasting partnerships.

To further strengthen trade ties, it is imperative to leverage technology-driven solutions — from e-commerce platforms facilitating direct buyer-seller interaction to digital trade financing tools that ease transactions. Pakistan’s growing tech startup ecosystem, coupled with Spain’s expertise in digital transformation, can create synergistic opportunities benefiting both markets.

Our delegation’s success underscores the shared commitment to building a resilient and mutually beneficial economic relationship. Moving forward, we envision more frequent exchanges, streamlined business processes, and joint ventures that will empower our business communities and contribute to the prosperity of both nations.

I extend my gratitude to the Spain Embassy in Pakistan, consulate of Pakistan in Barcelona, Embassy of Pakistan in Madrid & Islamabad Chamber of Small Traders and Industries for their unwavering support and to our Spanish counterparts for their warm hospitality and openness to partnership.
In addition to trade and technology, we held detailed discussions on promoting cultural and artistic exchange between Pakistan and Spain. We plan to initiate a cultural exchange program soon, which will further strengthen the ties between our nations.

Since May 10, 2025, Pakistan’s global respect and diplomatic stature have notably increased. This period represents a golden opportunity to elevate Pakistan’s foreign policy through enhanced bilateral trade and cultural exchange initiatives, fostering deeper cooperation and mutual understanding.

Together, Pakistan and Spain can harness the potential of innovation, trade, and diplomacy to write a new success story.
