ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT): Pakistan is establishing a “special protection unit” in the capital Islamabad to further enhance the security of Chinese nationals and joint development projects, the country’s interior minister said on Tuesday.

Mohsin Naqvi made the remarks during a high-level meeting with Chinese Interior Minister Wang Xiaohong in Beijing, where both sides held extensive talks on bilateral relations, counterterrorism cooperation, and law enforcement collaboration, according to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry in Islamabad.

“The security of Chinese nationals and joint development projects is a top priority (and) Pakistan has taken strong measures at all levels for the security of Chinese nationals and is establishing a special protection unit in Islamabad,” he said.

Naqvi also welcomed Chinese assistance in combating cybercrimes and said Pakistan wants to benefit from the expertise of Chinese institutions to strengthen the National Cyber Crimes Investigation Agency.

Both sides also discussed Islamabad–Beijing sister-city cooperation and agreed on a joint strategy to improve the training and professional capacity of police and security personnel through enhanced exchange of experience and information.

Recently, Pakistan’s top diplomat Ishaq Dar also visited China, spent three days in Beijing, and met with senior Chinese leaders, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Dar and Wang Yi also co-chaired the 7th round of China-Pakistan foreign ministers’ strategic dialogue on Sunday, where they discussed bilateral issues, including trade, multilateral cooperation, and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The $64 billion CPEC project is a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative. It connects China’s northwestern Xinjiang province to Pakistan’s Gwadar port in Balochistan via a network of roads, railways, and pipelines for cargo, oil, and gas transport.

The two countries also celebrate their 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.

China and Pakistan are “all-weather strategic cooperative partners,” and the bilateral trade between the two countries stands at around $23 billion.
