WNAM REPORT:  Indonesia outlined expanded military cooperation with Japan after signing a Defense Cooperation Arrangement (DCA), covering personnel exchanges, joint drills and maritime security, the Defense Ministry said.

“The agreement includes increased personnel exchanges, education and research, joint exercises, maritime security and disaster response cooperation,” Defense Ministry spokesperson Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The DCA also opens opportunities for cooperation in defense equipment and technology, to be developed gradually based on each country’s needs and national interests.

Earlier, Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi signed the DCA at the Defense Ministry in Central Jakarta on Monday.

The signing followed discussions on cooperation points held at the ministry’s Bhineka Tunggal Ika hall.

Rico said the partnership is a strategic step expected to significantly enhance Indonesia’s defense capabilities.

Through cooperation with Japan, Indonesia aims to gain technology transfers and military training to strengthen its domestic defense industry and human resources, he said.

He added the ministry will implement the agreement through various military activities going forward.

He expressed hope the cooperation will deepen, strengthening both countries’ defense capabilities and delivering mutual benefits.
