WNAM REPORT: The flower industry experienced a busy period due to Mother’s Day, which will be celebrated this weekend. Flowers harvested from greenhouses were carefully packaged and sent abroad and to auctions for the domestic market.
Ismail Yilmaz, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ornamental Plants and Products Exporters Association, told an AA reporter that the sector had a productive year.
Stating that Mother’s Day is one of the busiest special days for them, Yılmaz said, “This year, there has been an increase in orders compared to last year. We sent 80 million stems of flowers to various countries in Europe. The monetary value is around 12 million dollars.”
The most exported product was carnations.
Pointing out that exports have increased by nearly 30 percent compared to last year, Yılmaz stated that they sent flowers to 35 countries this year, mainly in Europe.
Yılmaz emphasized that pink-toned flowers are in higher demand on Mother’s Day, and continued as follows:
“It’s a special day where pastel colors take center stage. There wasn’t as much demand for red as on other days; pink, dark pink, and purple flowers were particularly ordered. Our biggest export item as a country is carnations. We sent the most carnations. Besides carnations, hyacinths have also become one of our most exported flowers in recent years. In addition, we sent nearly 50 different types of flowers, including gerberas and lilies.”
