WNAM REPORT: According to the Turkish Cypriot News Agency (TAK), Erhürman held a press conference at the presidential palace to evaluate his meetings in New York.
Erhürman indicated that they are always ready to hold productive talks with all parties regarding the solution of the Cyprus problem, saying, “We want 3+1 or 5+1 meetings that will lead us to a solution and yield successful results, not just for the sake of having meetings or taking photos.”
Erhürman emphasized that they would continue to make every effort in good faith to find a solution, and reminded that he had not rejected the trilateral meeting in New York. Erhürman stated, “My aim is to make progress. Do we want a solution or negotiations? Bringing 19 new points when there are only 7 points for progress is like adding water to a cooked meal.”
TRNC President Erhürman stated that meetings could be held in Lefkoşa, but they had to be productive, saying, “We will not negotiate just for the sake of it, just for the sake of having a meeting. Let’s have marathon meetings in Lefkoşa and achieve results. We will continue this effort with determination, explaining everything to all parties and keeping it on the agenda.”
Erhürman explained that the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General wanted to hold a meeting in a 5+1 format at the end of his visit to Cyprus and listed 7 topics: crossing points, mine clearance, joint response to disasters on the island, irregular migration, civil society, sports, and children born from mixed marriages.
Erhürman emphasized that, given these unresolved issues, the Greek Cypriot leader’s presentation of a new 19-point proposal at the last meeting was, so to speak, “adding water to a cooked meal.”
Stating that there is much work to be done and that they are determined to move the process forward, Erhürman noted that they are ready for meetings when the conditions for a successful outcome are created, and that these 7 topics should be focused on and efforts should be made towards them.
