WNAM REPORT: Turkmen-Japanese political consultations between the Foreign Ministries of the two countries were held in Tokyo. The Turkmen delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Akhmet Gurbanov, and the Japanese delegation was led by Special Representative of the Japanese Foreign Ministry for Central Asian and Caucasus Affairs Masaki Ishikawa. This was stated in a statement by the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan.

The parties noted the dynamic development of bilateral relations and discussed the holding of the first summit of the countries participating in the dialogue “Central Asia + Japan”. During the meeting, the desire to expand constructive partnership, including within the UN, was confirmed. Particular attention was paid to the UN General Assembly Resolution on the proclamation of 2025 as the “International Year of Peace and Trust” at the initiative of Turkmenistan.

Current projects in the trade and economic sphere were discussed, including cooperation in the oil and gas, gas chemical, electric power and transport industries. The parties also discussed Turkmenistan’s participation in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka and the holding of the National Day of Turkmenistan on April 14, 2025.

In the humanitarian sphere, effective cooperation was noted in the fields of education, science, cultural exchange and teaching of the Japanese language. Possibilities for developing cooperation in the field of digital systems and information technology were considered.

During the visit, Akhmet Gurbanov also met with Japanese Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hisayuki Fujii and member of the Board of Directors of Itochu Corporation Hiroyuki Tsubai. They discussed the prospects for Turkmen-Japanese cooperation and the implementation of the agreements reached at the meeting of the Turkmen-Japanese Committee on Economic Cooperation in December 2024 in Ashgabat.
