Jakarta ( WNAM MONITORING ): The Indonesian government is preparing various cultural attractions and live tourism events to celebrate Independence Day.
“This is concrete support from the Ministry of Tourism to realize the spirit of independence for every individual to share in the joy and pride of being Indonesian,” Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in a statement on Saturday.
She noted that the cultural performances aim to showcase Indonesia’s tourism appeal through culture, art, and music.
A series of arts and cultural shows will be presented during the Proclamation of Independence ceremony at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on August 17. The performances will involve more than 1,000 dancers and feature local musicians.
“This also symbolizes the immense wealth of the Indonesian nation, which we must preserve for the sake of unity and integrity, while strengthening tourism as a driver of the national economy,” Wardhana explained.
The government will also host a People’s Festival throughout the day at the National Monument (Monas) and surrounding streets in Jakarta. Organized by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with various partners, the festival will feature four themes:
- Photo Corner: photo booths, spots, and boxes for visitors.
- Podjok Djoeang: traditional Independence Day competitions such as climbing greased poles and sack races.
- Podjok Djadoel: traditional games, including marbles, spinning tops, and congklak (a classic board game).
- Night Market: entertainment, amusement rides, and food stalls.
All attractions will be free of charge.
In the evening, carnival cars decorated with themes reflecting Indonesia’s rich tourism heritage will parade through the festival area.
“We invite all levels of society to join in this celebration. Independence Day is a time for the entire nation to unite in celebrating Indonesia’s independence,” Wardhana said.
