Icons in every field of life are in short supply, lately. The dearth of talent is quite conspicuous in almost every field of life, whether it is politics, fine arts or sports. Political leaders like Roosevelt Churchil, de Gaulle, Mao TSE Tung, Cho en Lai, Hohn Chin Minh, Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Marshal Tito, Soekarno, Julias Neararey, Patrick Lumamba, Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Nehru, to mention a few, are a rare commodity these days. There is a paucity of great people in the true sense of the word in almost every field of life. Look at the sports and you won’t find a squash player of the calibre of Hasham Khan any more, hockey player of the status of Diyan Chand. Footballer like Maradona, and cricketer like Donald Bradman haven’t come after their demise. If we dig deep into the world of celluloid, we don’t come across film personalities any more like Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, Ingrid Bergman, Sir Oliver Lawrence, Naushad Ali, Ustad Bare Ghulam Ali Khan, Noor Jehan, Lata ,Mohammad Rafi and Shakil Badayuni. Sometimes one feels as if the era of excellence is well over now and we live in times where we will have to content our self by seeing persons of average standing in various fields of life who are not even a shadow of icons who once were seen by the world.
