WNAM MONITORING: The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned a suicide bombing at a mosque in northwestern Pakistan that killed at least 24 people and wounded dozens.
“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the heinous and cowardly suicide bombing terrorist attack at a mosque in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan,” Council President Jerome Bonnafont of France said in a statement.
The Sept. 18 attack killed at least 24 Pakistanis, including seven civilians and 17 law enforcement personnel, and injured at least 88 others. An armed network affiliated with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Council members underscored the critical need to hold the “perpetrators, organizers, financiers and sponsors” accountable, urging all countries to actively cooperate with the Pakistani government under international law and relevant council resolutions.
Expressing its condolences to the families of the victims and the people of Pakistan, the council reaffirmed that terrorism remains “one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,” emphasizing that such acts are “criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whomsoever committed.”
