(WNAM Monitoring): Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Muhadjir Effendy confirmed that 12 travelers returning to their hometown for Eid al-Fitr were killed in a collision on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road, West Java.

Following the accident, the coordinating minister visited the Karawang Regional Central Hospital to monitor the identification process of the victims.

“The police’s Inafis (Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System) team is still working to identify the victims,” Effendy stated here on Monday.

The coordinating minister spoke of been informed that the 12 casualties were from the two minibuses involved in the collision. Another vehicle involved in the accident was a passenger bus.

The 12 victims comprise seven males and five females. They were killed by the ensuing fire that consumed their vehicles after the collision, he added.

While the 12 casualties were evacuated to Karawang Regional Central Hospital, injured victims were evacuated to Rosela Hospital, also in Karawang.

Effendy said that police investigation into the causes of the accident is still underway.

The collision occurred at Kilometer 58 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll road on Monday morning.

The three vehicles involved in the accident comprised two minibuses, identified as Daihatsu Gran Max, with registration number B 1635 BKT, and a Daihatsu Terios, and a passenger bus, bearing registration number B 7655 TGD, operated by bus company Primajasa.

The two minibuses were burned in the accident, while the passenger bus suffered moderate damage.

The accident occurred when the Gran Max vehicle, travelling in a makeshift contraflow road eastward to Cikampek at Kilometer 58 of the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road, abruptly swerved to the opposite lane.

The passenger bus, travelling westward to Jakarta, could not avoid the minibus that had entered the lane, thereby making the collision inevitable. The Daihatsu Terios car then collided with the bus and the Gran Max car, causing it to also catch fire.
