TEHRAN ( WNAM REPORT) June 26th is the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking or World Drug Day. The Islamic Republic of Iran has always been under the influence of drug production and trafficking of the drug. Iran has been decisive and serious in the field of dealing with narcotics at the regional and global level and has sacrificed many lives and paid financial costs in this way. The proof is nearly 4,000 martyrs and 12,000 veterans who are physically injured in the fight against narcotics. According to the announcement of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Islamic Republic of Iran has succeeded to seize the largest amount of narcotics every year among other countries in the world. Therefore, Iran national seizure of narcotics stands the highest level in terms of amount in comparison to the other countries.
With firm determination in the necessity of regional and international cooperation in the field of combating narcotics and in order to implement a balanced strategy in this field, The Islamic Republic of Iran has tried to actively participate in the international and regional initiatives related to combating the narcotics. However, developing and expanding interactions and cooperation provide basis for taking joint actions in the fight against drugs at bilateral, regional, trans-regional and international levels. Although Iran’s actions in the global fight against narcotics have had clear effects in the national, transnational and international spheres, there is no doubt that in order to deal with the production and trafficking of narcotics, a joint initiative at the regional and international level and all-round support, especially in the financial field, are needed as a substantial necessity.
The immunity and security of the distant countries, including Europe countries, from narcotics is the outcome of the continuous actions of the Islamic Republic of Iran and other countries active in this field, especially the brotherly country of Islamic Republic Pakistan. The sacrifices of the soldiers of the two countries to prevent the smuggling and trafficking of narcotics to the distant areas, has created a margin of safety for the western countries. Iran and Pakistan are still sacrificing lives and paying financial costs in this way. Undoubtedly, the consequences of sanctions on fighting against narcotics will be boomeranged on the sanctions enforcers. However, regarding the area of fighting against drug trafficking, any initiatives towards lifting the sanctions will positively affect the sanction-imposers.
Since the Islamic Republic of Iran is at the forefront of the fight against narcotics, the level of support from the relevant international organizations and the world community to the Islamic Republic of Iran should be proportional to the activities and actions at the regional and global level.
