An age old adage says don’t look who is talking, look at what is he or she saying. While many people might not see eye to eye with Panjab chief minister on some issues but there will be very few who will deny the fact that right from day one in her day she has been working overtime in launching people- friendly developmental projects in the areas which come under her bailiwick making her counterparts in other provinces green with envy.
If her bureaucracy monitors work schedule on these projects and prevent corruption seeping into them they will before long facelift Panjab in many areas of life. There is no last word in politics till yesterday we were on the other side of the fence in so far our relations with the Soviets are concerned today we have hit it off on many issues with Moscow, the ample proof of which was provided by the recent visit to Pakistan of deputy premier of Russia. Time was when Pakistan used to play second fiddle to the US.
Isn’t it a fact that this country was in the vanguard of cold war against communism led by Washington. The extent of our blind allegiance to America in this respect can be gleaned from the fact that we didn’t mind handing over an airstrip near Peshawar to the US from where an American spy plane used to fly over the then Soviet union for taking serial photos of Soviet military installations till one day it was shot down by the Russians thus resulting in a long drawn out animosity of Moscow against us.
We had incurred enmity of Russia for the sake of the US which could have saved dismemberment of Pakistan in the Indo-Pak war of 1971 which it didn’t. The friendship of America has caused us more harm than good. We had better now continue mending fences with Moscow. Our cordiality with Beijing and Moscow would keep us out of the harm’s way in many areas. This is not to suggest that we should sever ties with America but we ought not allow the Americans to take liberties with us and force us to shut our doors on the Chinese and Russians. Once bitten twice shy we should no longer dance to the tune of the Yankees .
