Field Marshal Ayub Khan will always be remembered and credited for two things First, initiation of family planning programe and second, for construction of a couple of hydel power dams. Both of them , however, fell half way as no ruler after his departure from the corridors of power tried to carry forward work on these projects to their logical conclusion.
China too had excessive population issue much bigger than the one faced by us but since it was blessed with farsighted leadership it managed to control it in twenty years. But for opposition of lunatic fringe and obscurantist element in this country the family planning program initiated by Ayub Khan Pakistan would have controlled the population issue by now.
Hydel power is considered to be cheapest electricity Ayub Khan launched a couple of dams on country’s rivers during his stint in office but none of his successor could maintain the momentum and tempo generated by him in the matter with the result that we see electricity shortage in the country today.
