Jakarta (WNAM MONITORING ) The Indonesian government plans to establish fishponds covering a total area of 20,000 hectares on Java Island by the end of 2025.
Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said on Tuesday that the fishponds would be used for fish farming to support food sufficiency, particularly as a source of protein.
He explained that the development of the ponds would involve revitalizing old, abandoned fishponds along Java’s northern coastal region.
Hasan noted that around 70,000 hectares of ponds—previously used for tiger prawn cultivation—have remained unused for decades.
“Previously, they were used for tiger prawns, and now they’ll be revitalized for fish,” he remarked.
He added that outside Java, the government plans to build new ponds for shrimp farming and other purposes, especially to support capture fisheries.
Hasan also emphasized that the government would establish feed factories to support chicken and fish production. These factories would also be able to purchase corn directly from farmers.
“If the government also controls the feed supply—prices won’t be dictated by just one or two players, making feed more affordable and competitive,” he said.
