TV had not yet been introduced in the country and Radio Pakistan was the only electronic media in those days. ODIs and Twenty 20 matches too had not been introduced and only test matches used to be played. There were only a handful of countries which had cricket teams like Australia ,England,India ,Pakistan, New Zealand and West Indies.
Live radio commentary used to be broadcast during test matches and the duo of Omar Qureshi and Jamshed Marker of Radio Pakistan used to do running commentary of test matches. Both of them captivated listeners with their ball to ball commentary in a pronunciation which was a treat to listen. They described the match in a manner which made the listeners feel as if they are sitting in the cricket ground seeing the match with their own eyes.
They had God gifted voices which were pleasing to the ears.
When TV was introduced in the country the running commentary started to be done on the telly and Omar Qureshi, Jamshed Marker era came to an end.
Jamshed Marker later on joined foreign office and served as Pakistan’s ambassador also in a number of countries also Omer Qureshi used to write sports columns till his last breath in a Karachi’s eveninger.
Both have now joined the great majority. It is the considered opinion of sports journalists that Radio Pakistan hasn’t produced the likes of these two commentators.
