Jakarta(WNAM Monitoring): Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry urged Israel to comply with the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ’s) decision to prevent genocide acts against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip that led to at least 26 thousand being killed.

“Even though the ICJ’s decision has not fulfilled the expectations of many parties regarding the importance of ending Israeli aggression in Palestine, this decision is still an important development for the enforcement of international law,” as quoted from the ministry’s account on social media, X, on Saturday. In the verdict hearing that took place in The Hague, Netherlands, on Friday (January 26), the ICJ also decided that Israel must ensure that its troops do not commit genocide and take several steps to improve the humanitarian situation.

Moreover, the ICJ ordered Israel to report to the court within a month regarding their efforts to uphold the results of the trial’s decision. The court did not order a ceasefire but granted several emergency measures requested by South Africa, as it hears a case accusing Israel of genocide.

Responding to the verdict, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu affirmed his “sacred commitment” to continue to defend his country and his people. “Israel’s commitment to international law is unwavering. We will uphold our commitment to defend our country and our people,” he noted in a television speech.

He claims that the war, which has been ongoing since the cross-border attack carried out by the Palestinian militant group, Hamas, on October 7, 2023, is against the Hamas group, not against Palestinian civilians. However, until now, Israeli aggression in Palestine has killed at least 26 thousand Palestinians, mostly women and children, while 63 thousand others were injured, according to Palestinian health authorities.

Israel’s aggression has also displaced 85 percent of Gaza’s population amid shortages of food, clean water, and medicine, while 60 percent of the infrastructure in the enclave had been damaged or destroyed, according to the United Nations. Indonesian President Joko Widodo stated on Friday that he firmly opposed Netanyahu’s statement regarding the absence of a future for a two-state solution to resolve the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
