ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT): Chairman of the Pakistan Alternative Energy Association, Asif Javed, has stated that the net billing policy is alarming for both ordinary consumers and the future of renewable energy. He said that after the implementation of this policy, a common consumer will supply cheap electricity to DISCOs during the day and be forced to purchase expensive electricity at night.
He explained that new solar consumers will provide surplus electricity to DISCOs during the day at around Rs 11 per unit, while at night they will have to buy the same electricity at Rs 45 to 50 per unit. Additionally, the contract duration for new consumers has been reduced from seven years to five years, which will eliminate the feasibility of investment returns altogether.
Asif Javed further said that by abolishing net metering, solar energy has been pushed out of reach of ordinary consumers. This policy, introduced in the name of energy reforms, is effectively a punishment for general solar users. By making net metering expensive and inefficient, the only facility through which the middle class was getting some relief is also being taken away.
