In many countries of the world the gap between the rich and the poor has been widening by the day. Like the medieval kings a tiny elite class has been enjoying all the facilities that money could buy, whereas teeming millions across the globe don’t know where their next meal would come from . One thousand years BC a similar gap had arisen in the then state of Sparta in Greece when Providence sent a messiah in the shape of one ruler named Lycurgus who pulled the rug from under the elite class and removed inequality. Lycurgus first of all nationalized all landed property divided it into equal shares and redistributing it to the landless peasants. When he felt that the elite of Sparta wasn’t ready to part with the enormous gold accumulated by it he declared that henceforth iron instead of gold was going to be state currency thus eliminating corruption to a great deal. Experience of the hindsight reveals that unless all private property is finished no meaningful economic justice can be ensured in the society.
The votaries of the free enterprise should fear the day when a reformer like Lycurgus might appear again in this part of the world if the elite class doesn’t desist from the economic exploitation of the have nots. It must on its own strengthen hands of the rulers by contributing a fair amount of its money for the uplift of the man in the street as it alone can keep itself out of the harms way. The day of reckoning will come if not today , definitely tomorrow.
