ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT): Pakistan is working on the Trans-Afghan Railway project to boost regional connectivity and trade, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Friday.

Speaking at the last day of a two-day Regional Transport Ministers Conference in the capital Islamabad, Sharif said they are “already working” on “connectivity projects” such as the Trans-Afghan Railway and the Islamabad-Tehran-Istanbul Railway Corridor.

Sharif also said that “enhanced airlines to Central Asian countries along with frameworks such as the TIR Convention (Transports Internationaux Routiers, International Road Transport) and International Road Transport mechanisms” would go “a long way” in bringing countries together like “never before.”

“In today’s digital age, connectivity is not just limited to roads, railways, and airlines. It is all about data, innovation, research and development and technological integration,” he said.

Pakistan is investing in digital infrastructure to ensure that “we are adequately equipped to catch up with the fourth industrial revolution around the globe,” Sharif added.

At the opening session of the conference on Thursday, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said regional connectivity is essential for stability and shared progress, stressing the need for greater cooperation among neighboring countries.

Transport ministers from several countries, including Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Azerbaijan, and representatives of international organizations attended the event.
