ISLAMABAD ( WNAM REPORT ): Executive Member of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), Chaudhry Mazhar, has said that there is an urgent need to establish a separate administrative structure for Islamabad. He said that the population of Islamabad has now reached approximately 2.5 million, while the scope of civic needs, infrastructure, and public services has increased several-fold. Therefore, the existing system is no longer sufficient to meet the city’s growing administrative, civic, and public service requirements.
He said that the absence of an elected mayor in Islamabad also highlights the weaknesses of the existing local government system. The citizens of Islamabad need a governance system in which public representation, authority, and accountability are clearly interconnected.
He further said that there should be a clear legal and financial framework for the federal capital that takes into account its population, administrative responsibilities, civic needs, and available resources, so that adequate financial resources can be ensured for the city’s development and the provision of civic services.
