Jakarta(WNAM Monitoring): Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that Vietnamese electric car manufacturer VinFast is planning to set up a factory in Indonesia, with construction planned for this year.
“They will invest as soon as they have land,” he said after attending a meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) in Jakarta on Monday. “We are currently discussing several potential industrial areas with them.”
The government has shortlisted industrial areas in Batang, Central Java, and Karawang, West Java, as possible locations for the factory.
“We have offered options, but nothing is confirmed yet,” he added.
VinFast garnered Jokowi’s attention during his visit to the Indonesia International Motor Show (IIMS) on February 15. He even examined the interior and steering wheel of a VinFast car.
VinFast launched a series of right-hand-drive electric vehicles (EVs) at the exhibition, making Indonesia the first country to receive such offerings from the company.
They earlier announced plans to build an EV factory in Indonesia with a projected capacity of 50,000 cars per year.
The factory aims to create jobs and contribute to the EV industry in Indonesia.
