The southern districts of KPK are barren and had the erstwhile colonialists not evolved Rod Kohi irrigation its agriculture would have been non existent today. It goes to the credit of the then Deputy commissioner of DIK Bolton who channelized the gushing water of the mountains to the low lying plain barren lands of southern districts known in local parlance as Damaan, fixed the share in mountain water of the land through which it passed and also evolved a schedule under which the upper and lower riparians were to irrigate their land with that water turn by turn. Rod means channel and Koh mountain so name of Rod Kohi gained currency. The share of water and timings were reduced in black and white by British DC Bolton around 1906 in booklets billed as Kulyaat Abpashi and Riwajaat Abpashi and since then that irrigation system has been in vogue in southern most area of KPK. These booklets are treated as a Bible of Rod Kohi irrigation in Khan both by the DC DIK and AC Tank. The Deputy Commissioner DIK and AC Tank have to implement in letter and spirit Kulyaat Abpashi and Riwajaat Abpashi and come down with a heavy hand on those upper riparians who try to steal the irrigation water meant for lower riparians otherwise they cannot ensure good harvest. Granted that with the commissioning of Chashma Right bank canal irrigation of DIK would improve but even then the Rod Kohi irrigation system would be essential for the irrigation of southern districts of KPK and would require strict implementation of both Kulyaat Abpashi and Riwajaat Abpashi.
